A little bit about Simon…

Elliott has been involved with the All Whites for 15 years and has played at two FIFA Confederations Cup finals and would have gone to Mexico in 1999 if he had been released by his coach.

He earned his 50th A-international cap in a 3-0 win over New Caledonia on 20 September 2008.

He started playing football at about five years of age and his first club was Waterside Karori.

His family, and his grandfather in particular, encouraged him to play and one of his earliest memories of the game is of his grandfather teaching him to kick with his left foot.

Elliott was given the name Dingo by college teammates at Stanford University who thought it would be funny to give him an Australian nickname.

He lists his career highlights as: NCAA finalists at Stanford University; League, Cup, and CONCACAF Champions League winners with LA Galaxy; English Premier League with Fulham; 2008 Olympic campaign in China; and qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

He doesn’t follow any particular routines on the day of a big game but he does like to be the last one to go out of the tunnel and on to the pitch.

His goal for the FIFA World Cup is to help his teammates get the most out of themselves. “The strides the team have taken in the past few seasons have been phenomenal. If we continue as we have been in that regard the results will take care of themselves.’’

Elliott enjoys reading, especially about history and politics.

He does some coaching and is also involved in a couple of business endeavours outside of football.

He lives in Los Angeles and is engaged to Sarah.

it really doesn’t seem that long ago (’91?) that I joined your sister and ma at Welli airport to farewell an insanely talented, eager, teenage Simon E, off to do himself proud at Spurs! With the clarity possessed by only the most dedicated and talented you listed off your footballing goals (most of which sounded a little like pipe dreams): establish yourself in Spurs Juniors; play NZ national league; make the All Whites; become a full time professional; play in the English Premiership; play in a World Cup.

I’ve followed your career as you’ve ticked each off in turn, with genuine glee. Right now you’ve become the kind of hero to young footballing kiwis that the crew of ’82 were to you as an 8 year old. For that alone you should feel incredibly proud; for your efforts at the Cup – where you’re playing out of your skin – you deserve to feel much more than just proud.

Self belief and talent got you there, mate. And it can fuel the team into the second round. Relax and enjoy the match – you’ve proven that pipe dreams are actually within reach.

    Go well, fella.
