A bit about Leo…
Bertos joined his first team at Miramar Rangers when he was six or seven years old but he thinks he was probably kicking a ball around before he could walk because his father and grandfather loved football so much. His father and grandparents were born in Greece and football was the most popular sport in the family.
When he was growing up his favourite player was Brazilian striker Ronaldo. “I used to watch him play for Inter Milan or Barcelona, then go out and copy the things that he did in my next game. He was the main man for me.’’
Among his highlights, Bertos says signing his first professional contract at Barnsley was special, as was playing his first game for New Zealand against Iran in 2003, and playing against Brazil which had superstars like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Cafu, Kaka and Roberto Carlos in the side.
Bertos says playing at the World Cup has been a dream he’s had since he was a child.
Bertos was Wellington Phoenix Player of the Year 2008-09.
